Clinical Waste Audits & ‘Pre-Acceptance Checks’
Sircle's independent Clinical Waste Audits ensure that our clients meet their obligations to legislation, that their own in-house procedures are being observed by staff, and reduce potential risks that non-compliance can bring such as fines and refusal to collect.
Following the introduction of the Environment Agency (EA) guidance for waste management companies in 2012, the Department of Health document ‘Safe Management of Healthcare Waste Version 2.0: England’, and in line with ‘Management and Disposal of Healthcare Waste (HTM 07-01)’:
“those who create and seek to dispose of clinical waste* must provide audits of their waste to their waste management contractors if they are to continue to have their waste accepted for incineration or treatment. This audit is an Environmental Agency legal requirement and failure to provide an audit report could result in the EA prohibiting waste collecting companies from collecting.”
Clinical waste audits aren’t just limited to GPs and Hospitals, but also Medical Offices in Education, Opticians, Dentists, Vet Practices and many other healthcare providers including private practices.
Our Clinical Waste Audits provide the following:
- An independent audit, we don’t collect or dispose of waste so can make impartial assessments and recommendations
- Observation of the practices and procedures of the people involved in the waste creation
- Methods of disposal of the waste within an organisation
- Review of classifications of waste is correct
- Review of compliance paperwork and management policy and how it’s being applied on site
- Summary report of our findings complete with photos highlighting the non-conformance and the conformance situations
Whether you have one practice or require clinical waste audits nationwide, Sircle are able to meet your requirements either as a one-off project or on a long-term basis conducting either annual, 2 or 5 yearly inspections depending on the type or waste and service you provide (dentists and vets are required to have new audits every two years and the other organisations every five years).
*Clinical waste is that which could be hazardous, such as used dressings and needles and anything that might contain human tissue, blood or drugs. It is defined in the Controlled Waste Regulations 1992 as:
“(a) any waste which consists wholly or partly of human or animal tissue, blood or other body fluids, excretions, drugs or other pharmaceutical products, swabs or dressings, or syringes, needles or other sharp instruments, being waste which unless rendered safe may prove hazardous to any person coming into contact with it
(b) any other waste arising from medical, nursing, dental, veterinary, pharmaceutical or similar practice, investigation, treatment, care, teaching or research, or the collection of blood for transfusion, being waste which may cause infection to any person coming into contact with it”.
